Security+ is broad, vendor-neutral, and tied to real exam constraints. The current CompTIA exam is SY0-701. It costs $425, allows maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, and requires 750 on a scale of 100-900 to pass.
Security+ vs A+: different purposes
CompTIA A+ is an entry-level IT support credential covering hardware, software troubleshooting, operating systems, and basic networking. Security+ builds on that foundation with security concepts, threat analysis, cryptography, and governance. Many candidates pursue A+ first if they are new to IT entirely, then Security+ once they have foundational knowledge.
For candidates who already have IT experience, skipping A+ and going directly to Security+ is a common and valid path. DoD 8570/8140 requires Security+, not A+, for most security roles.
Should you get both?
If you are starting from zero IT knowledge, A+ first can accelerate Security+ preparation. If you already have IT experience, Security+ alone is the more efficient investment. The two certifications are not competing — they occupy different positions on the same ladder.
